Saptarishi Kund Trek at an altitude of 4421 meters above the sea level and it is considered as one of the most difficult treks inthe Himalayas. This glacial lake is half kilo meter long, dark bluish in colourand the main source of Yamuna River. The Kund is fed by Champasar glacier and it surrounded by rocky glaciers. The highlight of the trek is the Sapt Rishi Kund, a natural spring that is believed to have been visited by the seven sages of Hindu mythology.
The trek starts from the holy town of Yamunotri , located in the Garhwal Himalayas. The trail takes you through lush forests of pine, oak, and deodar trees.
Saptrishi is considered as one of the most difficult trerk in uttarakhand, though it is short trek but their is no predefined path and campsite.
The trek is best undertaken from May to June and from September to October. During the monsoon months of July and August, the trail can be slippery and dangerous. The trek is suitable for experienced trekkers who are physically fit and have some prior experience of high-altitude trekking.
As the trail is challenging so they remain least crowded and very few trekkers have explored the region. It is for those enthusiasts who are looking to take up the challenges and look forward for higher expeditions. The trails are rarely touched so the beauty is under explored and unaffected.
mythology behind Saptrishi Kund
Saptrishi Lake is considered sacred because in ancient times, 7 sages named Rishi Kashyap, Atri, Gautama, Viswamitra, Bharadwaj, Vasisthaand Jamadagni performed penance here. Yamunotri temple, one of char dham is the main attraction on this trek. Beside the temple are many hot water springs, the prominent one is Surya Kund. Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in the hot water spring and keep it as ‘Prashad’.
